Summer evokes all kinds of feelings.  On the one hand, there’s happiness.  I mean, who doesn’t enjoy those long, lazy summer days?  The wonders of savoring a yummy popsicle like when you were young or sipping cool cocktails by the pool and looking all posh.  But then there’s the dread that comes with those hot summer months.  Summer means short shorts, tanks tops, and bikinis.  Yikes!  No, I’m not afraid of bearing some skin – although I could probably stand to lose some poundage, but that’s another story – it’s the waxing that we girls must endure to look fab that can dredge up fear.  

But waxing isn’t all that bad.  It is, after all, an effective method of hair removal, since there won’t be regrowth for two to eight weeks.

Be prepared and keep the following points in mind to ensure a more painless waxing experience:  

Before:

• Be sure to have at least a quarter inch of hair growth before you wax.  The wax needs something to hold onto when removing the hair from the follicle.
• Shower 30 minutes before, since clean hair will be picked up by wax easier
• Don’t schedule a wax the week before your period because studies show that’s when we are most susceptible to pain
• Minimize pain by popping a couple of ibuprofens half an hour to an hour before your appointment.
• When getting a bikini wax, apply a numbing agent to the bikini line

During:

• Make sure that you use a wax that contains chamomile, especially if you have sensitive skin
• Apply wax only to small sections at a time.  Be vary of aestheticians who claim to wax quickly.  A trip to South American (Brazilian) should take 30′ or more, not 15!
• Relax.  Zone out and breath.  Listen to your favorite music.
• Minimize pain by pressing on the skin that was just waxed after each strip

After

• Prevent ingrown hair by exfoliating 24 hours after your appointment.  If you use a chemical exfoliant, make sure it has both salicylic acid and glycolic acid.  Salicylic acid unclogs pores, wile glycolyic acid sloughs off dead skin
• To make the next wax go more smoothly – pun intended – use hair-minimizing lotion between appointments
• Keep your razor and tweezer away!
