• On their fashion sense: “I think you’re either born with a sense of style or you’re not. Either you care or you don’t. And we love fashion. When we were going to NYU, I think that was the first time we were aware of the power of our personal style. Not the power of it, but the result of it. Between the big sunglasses and the Starbucks cup and the big sweaters, the hobo-chic thing, we were more shocked than anything [by the media coverage]. I get it; we were fortunate enough to have really nice clothes, and we put them together in this raggedy way. My mom wears glasses this big”—she mimes massive goggles—”from the ’70s, and you wonder where we got it from?”
• On having her and twin sister Mary-Kate’s names on everything: “Mary-Kate and I never really wanted our names on a bunch of different things. It wasn’t us — it never felt like us.”
• On her busy childhood: “I look back at the things that we did and the clothes that we wore, and I think, ‘Wow, we really were troupers.’ It was almost like I was in the army. School, work, homework, fly to New York, get in at 2 in the morning, do a morning show at 5 am, then another one at 7, then a radio interview at 10.”
• On being surprised she never had a public breakdown as a result of growing up in the spotlight: “I look at Britney, and I’m surprised I didn’t end up like her.”
• On driving and paparazzi: “I love driving, but sometimes I’m not too good with it because I spend too much time looking in the rearview mirror if I know I’m being followed. You don’t respond like, ‘Oh, there’s paparazzi.’ It’s more like, ‘There’s a man, and he’s gonna attack me.’ That’s how your body responds.
• On winding down with Rock Band and her boyfriend: “I swear to you, [Rock Band's] brought out this whole new thing in me. I can be a very serious person, and I take my job very seriously, but at the end of the day, I need a break. . . [Being able to count on Justin Bartha] — It’s more important than anything else in the world.”

On dressing her curves: “I love my curves and I embrace them, but I have to walk a fine line. There are certain dresses that are like: ‘Oh, this is really feminine. This isn’t sexy at all’, but then I’d try it on and it just turned. I think it comes down to being voluptuous, and if your body’s a certain way, then things can go distasteful in a second. I have to walk a fine line.”

On her banned Calvin Klein adverts: “You can’t show your nipples, apparently, in the States. But you can blow up anything you please in a movie or on TV.”

On therapy: “I love therapy! I’m very into it. I’m very in touch with my feelings, so I’m a completely different person. Not that different, but there’s nothing like going in and sitting down and talk.”

• On how his career got started: “I got crazy lucky. Like, sometimes I think I won the lottery or something. At times it feels like the bottom’s gonna fall out. Just ’cause I don’t really know how I got here. But I just keep moving forward, and it just keeps getting better and better.”
• On dieting for a role/photo shoot: “I have a special meal plan that I’m on. It’s pretty much just chicken and broccoli and brown rice. Four times a day. And egg whites. Just to get lean. I got a job coming up, too, that I’m starting in August, that I’m starting to train for. It’s called The Eagle of the Ninth. It’s a Kevin Macdonald film. He did The Last King of Scotland.”
• On G.I. Joe: “This is, like, my first step out into the whole commercial realm. I hope it does okay.”

• On future home-building plans: Channing points out a spot on his uncle‘s property where he he says “I’m a-gonna build mine right about there. Nothin’ big. Just enough for him and Jenna to come and relax, and for Jenna’s folks to visit. Ride horses, four-wheelers. It’s bigger than the tub at the Soho Grand.” 
• On Republicans in Alabama disliking his politics: ”I don’t care. If they don’t like me because I voted for Obama, then f**k them. I like horses and I like Obama. Nothin’ wrong with that.”
• On his mom and education: ”If it wasn’t for her literally doing my homework for me, I would not have even graduated high school. Guaranteed . . . My mom always said, ‘Luck is nothing but preparation and opportunity.’ I think because I’ve had that history of not really being great in school, I probably try to overcompensate. That’s why I try to read so many books. Just so I don’t feel . . . uneducated.”
• On what Channing is reading: “I got two books on [Kindle]… [one] about the start and finish of the Roman Empire. I don’t have to read this stuff, but I love it.”
• On hunting: “I have a motto: You don’t kill anything you ain’t gonna eat.”

• On acting in the future:  ”There’s not, like, a burning passion in me that I have to act and I don’t care what I do. Until something comes along that I feel as strongly about as I did Hermione—like, I felt that it was life or death—I don’t want to act again.”
• On her personal style:  “I’m young, so I’m still experimenting. But I think [my style] is quite British and very much about individuality.”
• On her boyfriend Jay Barrymore:  “The only reason it’s ‘on/off’ is because the papers make up so much rubbish!”
• On the paparazzi:  ”[At my eighteenth birthday party] they laid down on the pavement and took pictures up my skirt. Now I’m going to wear cycling shorts whenever I get out of cars.”
• On taking fashion risks:  ”There’s nothing interesting about looking perfect—you lose the point. You want what you’re wearing to say something about you, about who you are.”
• On her on-screen romance in the Half-Blood Prince:  ”At the beginning, it looks like [Hermione and Ron are] on their way to finally being together, but of course Ron screws it up. So she’s jealous, and doesn’t quite realize it, and they have all these arguments.”

If someone doesn’t like what I do, that’s OK everyone is entitled to their opinion. But if they don’t like like what I do because of who I’m married to, that’s unfair.”
• On marriage: Marriage is really good. It suits me. I find it really romantic – I like saying ‘My husband’. He’s very kind, incredibly strong. Whenever you are with him you feel safe.”

Oscar winner Aussie native, Cate Blanchett, glows on the cover of InStyle Australia’s June 2009 issue in a black embellished Louis Vuitton dress.  In the interview with Juliet Rieden, Cate shares her thoughts on fashion, family, and moving back to Australia from London in order to take on the joint directorship of the Sydney Theatre Company.  Here are some tidbits:

• On dressing for the red carpet: “I love dressing up for the red carpet. It’s got to be fun, otherwise you’re just wasting your time. It’s not everyday you get to wear couture, so I do relish the chance to dress up.”
• On her role as a mother: “They develop differently. You work as hard as you can to not only foster, but protect your children. You want to encourage and help them develop, but most importantly not to screw them up. And then there’s a large part of them – even from when they feed as newborns and the way they sleep as newborns, the way they’re born – that are latent, early manifestations of their personality. If you release those then they gradually become more and more defined.”
• On how Australian women differ from other nations: “I’m not one to generalise, but I think Australians are deeply curious, probably driven by necessity and our geographical position in the world. We’re quite outward-looking, and I think we are very optimistic – not a dour nation.

• On finding love:  ”I used to say that I wanted someone cute and nice, an actor too, so he’d get it. But now I think it would be good for me to date someone who’s not in the business. Being cool, having a ‘cool’ energy, is just not attractive to me.”
• On her upcoming debut album:  ”It’s what I’ve gone through with heartache, friendships, and things like that. I want my fans to know me a little bit better after they hear this record.”
• On her BFF, Demi Lovato:  ”We’re both surrounded by adults 24/7, and we have to act professional, but when we’re together we can just be sixteen. We both go through a lot, so it’s nice to know that no matter what, I’ll always have her.”
• On Taylor Swift:  ”She has helped me through some really hard times. And the thing I can’t stand about that girl is that she doesn’t even need to dress up and she still looks pretty.”

• On her latest movie, My Sister’s Keeper: “It’s about falling in love. It’s about all different kinds of love. Parents falling in love with their children. Children falling in love with their parents. Falling in love for the first time. Falling in love with being a teenager. All of the things that you fall in love with, that our hearts give way to over a lifetime, and then the heartbreaks when those things get taken away.”
• On her role in My Sister’s Keeper: “This is a woman who does not waver…That’s not something you want to accept about anybody you love – particularly if you are mother…That’s what I held on to as I was telling her story. You are a parent. You fight to keep your child alive, no matter what it takes.”
• On the roles she chooses: ”People who put labels on themselves limit themselves. If you are a woman who’s been labeled as a sex symbol, for instance — I mean, I am not saying that’s the label people would apply to me. But if you see yourself that way, inevitably you get to a point when you are no longer a sex symbol. And if you can’t move past that, you’re putting a limit on yourself; you’re arresting your development. And that’s where I think a lot of women get in trouble.”
• On being relaxed about her movie career: “It’s been fifteen years now, and I really feel like I’m just understanding it. You know, the toolbox is just taking shape. And I like that because, if you are lucky, life’s a long journey, and I love the learning process. There are so many movies that I still want to make, so many different kinds.”
• On loving the Big Apple: “It’s the best thing ever! New York is the best city in the world, no doubt about it. No other city possesses what New York possesses.”  
• On the death of her dad: “I think… emotionally, it definitely took its toll..It’s the human experience…You know, that’s what the heart does. Things are given to us, and things are taken away. And I think the heart becomes stronger, more capable.”
• On aging: ”It’s a journey. It’s a total journey. But it’s also true. I mean, I’m not 25 years old anymore, nor do I want to be. I wouldn’t even want to go back to being 30. You know what I mean? That journey—I’ve done it already. I don’t want to do it again. It’s a lot of work to get through it, and I am excited about moving forward. I think that people get caught up in getting back to some place that they already passed. Or to a place where you cannot stay.”
